As OverPower enters the competitive landscape of collectible card games (CCGs), we recognize the crucial role local game stores (LGS) play in building and nurturing gaming communities. To support these vital hubs, our Kickstarter campaign has introduced specifically crafted retail tiers that are rich in content and designed to facilitate a wide range of play formats and gaming experiences.

Comprehensive Retail Offerings

Understanding the diverse needs of players and stores, we have equipped our retail tiers with an extensive array of items to ensure LGS can offer something special to their customers and play community.

Booster Boxes and Starter Deck Boxes

Each retail tier includes a substantial quantity of both booster boxes and starter deck boxes, ensuring retailers are well-prepared to meet the needs of both newcomers and seasoned players.

Starter Deck Boxes: Essential for new players, these decks provide a balanced introduction to OverPower, enabling beginners to quickly learn the game and join the community with confidence.

Booster Boxes: Filled with packs that contain a dynamic mix of cards, these boxes support regular game play and tournament preparation, keeping the player community engaged and active.

Power Card Stations

A key addition to the retail tiers is the inclusion of multiple Power Card Stations. These stations are equipped with essential foundational cards needed for deck building, particularly useful for draft and sealed play formats as well as for newcomers starting their collection. By providing these Power Card Stations, we ensure that LGSs can efficiently support a variety of in-store events, allowing players to build multiple decks with ease and flexibility. Just remember to return the cards after playing!

Each bundle includes a carefully selected range of add-ons that boost playability, aesthetic appeal, and collector interest. Below are the specific add-ons included to enrich the retail offerings:

  • Game Mats: To kickstart the playing experience, our retail tiers include single-player game mats for individual play, double-player game mats for head-to-head challenges, and double-player “how to play” game mats, which are perfect for newcomers looking to learn the game.

  • Sleeves: Each tier is equipped with complete sets of sleeves featuring all available artwork. These sleeves not only protect the cards but also allow players to personalize their game experience with their favorite designs.
  • Uncut Sheets: A diverse array of uncut sheets is included in each tier, providing collectors and enthusiasts with unique items that are rarely available in standard retail settings.

Exclusive Stretch Goals and More

The retail tiers are further enriched by Kickstarter-exclusive stretch goals, which add tremendous value and exclusivity:

  • Any Hero Essential Foil Pack: This pack ensures that retailers can offer highly sought-after foil cards that enhance any player’s collection.

  • Bound Rule Book: A high-quality bound version of the rule book adds a premium feel to the retailer’s offerings.

  • Additional Uncut Sheets: More uncut sheets as part of the stretch goals mean more exclusive content for retailers to attract collectors.

Future Purchasing Opportunities

Importantly, while the retail tiers provide a substantial initial stock, retailers will have the opportunity to replenish and expand their offerings. Once the Pledge Manager opens after the Kickstarter campaign concludes, retailers can purchase additional booster boxes, starter deck boxes, and other add-ons at wholesale prices. Moreover, custom orders can be facilitated through our dedicated page at OverPower Card Game Retail Inquiries, ensuring that LGSs can tailor their stock to meet the specific demands and interests of their local player base.

Our Kickstarter retail tiers are not just about providing product; they’re about empowering retailers to become central venues for vibrant, passionate gaming communities. By offering a rich mix of products and exclusive items, including Power Card Stations, we aim to support retailers in attracting both seasoned players and newcomers, ensuring that everyone can find something special at their local game store. Through strategic offerings and ongoing support, OverPower is committed to enhancing the CCG ecosystem and ensuring that players and stores alike experience success and satisfaction.

Designing OverPower: Our Commitment to Fairness and Depth in Gaming

At Lazarus Rising Games, our journey into the world of collectible card games (CCGs) is deeply rooted in a childhood passion shared by our team. As lifelong players of tabletop games, we’ve woven our experiences and ideals into OverPower, crafting a game built around play balance and creating a “meta” where you will see a FAR greater variety of decks being competitive than normal CCG’s.  Our innovative coalition model means we do not have to design within the Industry’s standard “pay-to-win” model used by most every other game on the market.

OverPower is designed to be accessible to everyone. All playable cards are available at the common and uncommon levels, making them easy to collect from packs and ensuring that players can easily build any deck they wish for a fraction of the cost of traditional CCG models. This allows us to design the game with the opposite mentality of the trading card industry, and make every single card playable.

We at Lazarus Rising Games have adopted the moniker of Ron Peraza, Co-Creator of Overpower, “Every Character is Somebody’s Favorite.” We design our character from the start by immersing ourselves in their lore and learning what it is that people love about them.  THEN we work backwards to align and balance the card mechanics to not only respect the lore, but also keeps power creep in check. This methodology ensures that every expansion and new card introduced to the game enriches the player experience without disrupting the game’s balance.

Understanding that CCG players often feel overwhelmed by rapid and continuous expansions, we have consciously decided to release no more than three expansions per year. This measured approach allows players to fully explore and enjoy each set without the pressure of constant new releases, making the game more enjoyable and less burdensome financially.

Our rare chase cards are based purely on cosmetics, featuring artwork drawn by both legendary and emerging extraordinary talent. Players can pursue these beautiful cards, however, their value is aesthetic rather than game-altering. This strategy supports a healthy singles market at local game stores (LGS), empowering them to thrive while reassuring players that their success in the game hinges on the choices they make, not what they spend.

Community Engagement and Player Incentives

To further foster a passionate community of players, we are excited to introduce a player incentive program. This initiative will soon offer players the opportunity to collect alternative uncommon, rare, and ultra-rare cards by hosting ‘learn to play’ events, judging sanctioned events, playing in, and winning events, and earning Power Points to redeem on our online rewards shop. This program is designed to drive community engagement and support our players in a meaningful way, rewarding their involvement and achievements within the OverPower community.

Why OverPower is Your Ideal Second CCG

We recognize that investing in a new CCG can be a significant commitment. That’s why we’ve designed OverPower as an ideal second CCG to play. It’s built to be affordable, fair, and extremely well play-balanced,  providing a fresh yet familiar experience that respects both your time and wallet.

By choosing OverPower, you’re joining a community where skill and creativity are rewarded, narratives are cherished, and fun is the primary goal. Whether you’re a seasoned CCG player or looking for a new challenge, OverPower invites you to enjoy what all CCG’s should be.

OverPower is not just about strategic gameplay; it’s also a celebration of exceptional art. We at OverPower are privileged to collaborate with an array of incredibly talented artists to create alternative Rare and Ultra Rare cosmetic cards for our game. These cards are a feast for the eyes and a collector’s delight. They feature some of the most iconic characters from literature and pulp and are captured here on the best looking cards in any CCG.

Leading the pack is the legendary Joe Jusko, known for his detailed and vibrant paintings that have defined the genre for two generations. Joining him are other illustrious artists such as Philip Tan, whose dynamic line work brings characters to life; Don Aguillo, known for his lush and intricate illustrations; Francesco Tomaselli, whose bold style captures the essence of adventure; and Jesus Merino, renowned for his classic superhero depictions. The roster is further enhanced by Jon Lam, Leo Chiola, Michal Ivan, Seth Adams, Viktor Farro, Joe Prado, Raymond Gay, and Casey Parson, each bringing their unique perspectives and styles to the table.

Here are some glimpses into the alternative artworks you can expect:

Headless Horseman by Viktor Farro: A chilling rendition of the phantom rider.

Merlin by Don Aguillo: A powerful portrayal of the legendary wizard.

Dracula by Seth Adams: A hauntingly depiction that embodies the dark allure of the infamous vampire.

Anubis by Raymond Gay: The lord of the underworld.

Each alternative artwork card is designed to highlight the artists’ skills, featuring reduced character card information to allow more space for the art to shine. Select cards will also include a gold signature, adding an exclusive touch that enhances their collectibility.

As we continue to reveal more artwork and announce additional artists, each card released becomes a testament to the creative collaboration between OverPower and the global artistic community. These cards not only enhance the visual experience of the game but also celebrate the rich narratives and iconic status of the characters depicted.

Stay tuned as we unveil more stunning artworks and introduce the talents behind them.

OverPower’s Booster Packs Redefine the CCG Experience

OverPower is setting a new standard for collectible card games with its uniquely designed booster packs. Each pack contains 17 cards, offering more value than the typical CCG on the market. Unlike other games that often include filler cards to pad out packs, every card in an OverPower booster is playable.

Booster Pack Structure

Each OverPower booster pack is carefully structured to deliver the best gameplay experience with a mix of strategic options:

  • Common Slot – All packs will contain 2 Character Stacks (total of 12 cards):
    • Character Card: 1 per stack
    • Special Cards: 5 per stack
    • These stacks are randomized so a player never knows which two characters they are getting.

  • Uncommon Slots (total of 4 cards) can contain the following:
    • Homebases
    • Teamwork Cards
    • “Any Character” Cards
    • Multi Power Power Cards
    • Sixth Character Special One-Per-Deck

  • Rare Slot (1 card per pack):
    • Guarantees one Rare card per booster pack
    • Possibility of finding an Ultra Rare instead
    • All Rare and Ultra Rare cards have a chance of appearing in Foil in the Rare slot

This ensures that each booster pack not only advances your collection, but also equips you with two immediately usable characters for building your decks.

As we’ve already revealed, all of our playable cards will be in the Common and Uncommon slots and our rarity model is purely cosmetic. This ensures that every booster pack offers something valuable and sought after, making each purchase a worthwhile addition to a player’s deck. However, if you simply want to focus on playing the game, the barrier of entry and cost to build a competitive deck will be the lowest of any CCG on the market.

To streamline gameplay and enhance the fun, we have removed the foundational Power Cards, Mission Cards, Event Cards, Basic Universe Cards, and Training Cards. They will not appear in boosters but will be available in Starter Decks and/or the Power Card Station. This decision ensures that each booster pack focuses on cards that allow players to jump into the game faster.

At Lazarus Rising Games, we’re committed to providing exceptional value to our players. Our focus on enriching the booster packs reflects exactly what we as players want from a pack opening experience. As kids try to buy CCG’s, we want each pack to be something exciting and immediately usable. With OverPower booster packs, players can be confident that they are getting the best value per card on the market, and that they will have two characters they can IMMEDIATELY play with.

As we celebrate the successful launch of OverPower by Lazarus Rising Games, we are excited to introduce new game formats that cater to both new players and veteran collectors. With the release of our “Learn to Play Rulebook”, these formats are meticulously designed to enhance your experience, whether you’re aiming for glory in high-stakes tournaments or enjoying casual play with friends. Here’s a breakdown of the game formats now available, along with supported game modes.

FORMATS

Golden Age Format
The Golden Age format celebrates OverPower’s rich history by including all classic OP cards from the game’s inception along with new cards developed by Lazarus Rising Games. This format is perfect for legacy players or hardcore fans eager to explore the full historical breadth of OverPower. Note that this format will adhere to the banned card list, ensuring a balanced and competitive playing field.

Silver Age Format
Looking ahead, the Silver Age format will include all sets from the Lazarus Rising Games era once multiple expansions are available. This format will be ideal for players who have collected cards since the relaunch and want to engage in both competitive and casual play using a broader card pool. Like Golden Age, Silver Age will use a banned card list to maintain balance.

Modern Age Format
As the standard bearer for competitive play, the Modern Age format features only the most recent expansion sets. This format is designed to be accessible and appealing to new players while serving as the main competitive arena for regional and national tournaments. Sets will transition to the Silver Age format as newer sets are introduced, keeping the Modern Age fresh and exciting.

CONSTRUCTED PLAY

There are multiple game modes and game formats to play OverPower in. Each mode of play tweaks the rules of the game in order to have a slightly different play experience. The Constructed Play Modes below use the rules above, with any modifications listed in the game mode description.

Venture – Normal Venture Play is the Standard game mode described throughout this Rule Book. Players will wager Objectives based on how many numerical hits they think they can score combined with cards that influence the Venture Total, and play continues until either player wins or loses all their Objectives, or a player loses by having their entire team KO’d.

BrawlFor this mode of play, all cards that mention Venture or Objective Cards are removed from decks; unless the effect is a secondary effect, in which case the effect is simply ignored. Additionally, players do not attempt to complete a Mission and do not play Event Cards any may not concede battles. The only way to win a Brawl game is by completely KOing all four of your opponent’s characters. This mode is generally just for fun or teaching the game, as characters are balanced for game modes that use Objective Cards.

Skirmish – When playing a Skirmish game, players remove Event Cards from decks, and select between 5, 7 or 9 Mission Objective Cards to be used for both players. All chosen Objective Cards are placed in the Astral Plane and during each battle and the player with the highest Venture Total takes 1 Objective Card at the End of Battle phase. Players may also concede during Skirmish play, and give the Opponent the 1 Objective Card.

Each battle, another Objective Card is given to the winning player. Should there ever be a tie in Venture Total, the Objective Card is placed atop the next one in line and the next battle is fought for both Objective Cards, and so on until a player wins the Venture Total. Once all the Objective Cards have been claimed, the game is over and the player with the most Objective Cards wins. Unlike normal Venture play, If at ANY point all characters on an Opponent’s team are KO’d they IMMEDIATELY lose the game. This means even if a player has won every single Objective Card the entire game, if all four of their characters are KO’d in the final battle, they still lose the game!

A Skirmish game doesn’t end until EVERY Objective Card has been claimed or all characters on one player’s team are KO’d. Even if a player has a Majority of Mission Objective Cards, they must fight the entire Skirmish and not lose by having their characters KO’d.

If at any point a player has the majority of Mission Objective Cards in a Skirmish game they may no longer concede battles.

LIMITED PLAY

Limited game modes use a limited pool of cards, from which players must construct their deck using ONLY those cards, with the exception of Basic Power Cards. Basic Power Cards are always allowed to be added to any limited deck in any quantity, however, note that MultiPower and Any-Power power cards are not Basic.

Draft – In Draft Mode Players will play in a pod of 8 or 10 Players. Players receive 3 sealed packs from the same set of OverPower. Each pack of OverPower has 2 Character Cards and 5 set Special Cards for each character. Those six cards are referred to in Draft as a “ Character Stack.” All Players will open 1 pack of OverPower and set their two Character Stacks of cards in the center of the table. All Uncommon and Rare cards are kept by the player who opened them and are kept secret from the rest of the Players. Those Uncommons will influence your choices on what Character Stacks you draft.

Starting with the player sitting in position #1, each player will take a turn in numerical position order choosing 1 Character Stack (Hero and 5 specials), until the final position makes their pick. THEN the last player in position (8 or 10) will make a Second Pick in a row and the pick order will “Snake” back with players each picking a 2nd Character Stack in reverse numerical position order.

Players will then open pack #2 and repeat this process, except in Pack Two, the player sitting in the last position will choose a Character Stack first and the picks will Snake back to position 1 in “reverse numerical order”. Once position 1 makes both picks, players will pick a 2nd character from Pack 2 in numerical order, ending at position 8 or 10 depending on the size of your pod.

Finally, Players will open Pack #3 and repeat the picking process exactly as they did in pack 1.

Note* Players keep all Uncommon and Rare cards that they open in a draft event. They always keep those cards secret and ANY Uncommons and Rares opened may be used during deck construction.

When building your deck in Draft you may ONLY use cards that you opened in your packs Uncommons and Rares slots, the Characters Stacks that you drafted, and any number of Basic Power Cards level 1 – 8 in their deck. NO OTHER CARDS from outside the draft may be used, including Universe, Event and Location Cards.

Sealed Deck – In Sealed Deck Mode there is no need to play in Pods like in a Draft and you can have any number of players like a standard tournament. In Sealed players receive 1 Starter Deck randomly, as well as either 3 or 6 Booster Packs. Players open their Starter Deck and packs and must construct their deck using ONLY the cards opened from these packs and decks, except for Basic Power Cards. Players may put any number of Basic Power Cards level 1 – 8 in their deck. ONLY cards you open and Basic Power cards may be used in your deck. NO OTHER CARDS from outside the draft may be used, including Universe, Event and Location Cards.

We are thrilled to announce that our Kickstarter campaign for OverPower has been a phenomenal success. Launched at midnight on Monday, we reached our initial funding goal of $50,000 in an astonishing ten minutes! The overwhelming support from the community has been both humbling and exhilarating for everyone at Lazarus Rising Games.

The excitement was so palpable that Joe and Ronald, spent the entire night awake, fueled by the thrill of the campaign’s launch and the preparations for LRGs first exhibit, at the iconic New York Comic Con, visit us at Booth #4321 and claim the two convention exclusive promo cards. Their dedication and the team’s hard work have truly paid off, showcasing the passion behind bringing OverPower back.

Stretch Goals Achieved

Thanks to the incredible outpouring of support, we have surpassed several key milestones:

  • Fully Funded in the first ten minutes of campaign launch.
  • At $100,000, we unlocked four exclusive digital wallpapers for all backers.
  • We reached $150,000, unlocking a commissioned piece of alternative artwork by the talented Raymond Gay, which is a Kickstarter Exclusive and won’t be available in the retail print run.

Exciting Upcoming Milestones

As our campaign continues to surge forward, more exciting stretch goals lie ahead:

  • Now, we are closing in on the $200,000 stretch goal, which will release the 2023 promo cards from the tournament circuit, available for backers at applicable tiers.
  • At $250,000, we will unlock the first 10 of 43 character cards and specials, which will be printed with foil and transform the related common/uncommon cards into rare editions. These foil cards will be exclusive to the Kickstarter print run and will not be available at retail.
  • The $300,000 goal will increase the foil drop rate for all foil cards, a feature exclusive to Kickstarter backers, while retail versions will maintain a standard drop rate.

With each stretch goal, we are able to enhance the OverPower experience further, thanks to the enthusiastic participation of our backers. We are immensely grateful for the community’s support and excitement, which propel us to continue delivering on our promises and surpassing expectations.
